I enjoy reading and sharing children's books with others whether it be a fellow classmate, teacher, or student.

Chester Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully - Audrey Penn, Barbara Leonard Gibson

This would be a wonderful book to read the first few days of school! This could be introduced as a bullying prevention, and can also be considered for creating a "family feel" within the classroom. I would do this by telling the students in our class we all work together to achieve one goal. Another lesson that could be taught on this book would be inspiration stories, and the example of this from the story is the story that the mother told all of the forest animals. She used this story to inspire them to make a decision together to overcome and invite the bully to play with them.

Over in the Meadow - Ezra Jack Keats

This was a very cute book that I would read in a kindergarten or first grade class. It would be a good book source for counting numbers, repetition, or rhyming. Each page started with a new number that had a picture to go along with it and an ABAB rhyme scheme. I would love to have my class write their own book all together! I could assign each student a number and they could write a rhyme and illustrate a picture to go along with their writing. They could choose their topic as a class and we would have an entire book written & illustrated by our class!

Rosa - Nikki Giovanni, Bryan Collier

This was a very interesting book. It kept my attention with the details and the vocabulary was very appropriate for students. It is a great source for the story about Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights Movement. This book paints a picture of how Rosa's Park's day went from a normal December afternoon, to a monumental day! It tells more than a history book as it dives into Rosa's thoughts and how her close friends reacted to her arrest. This would be a great source for a unit on the Civil Rights Movement. I would read this book in a 4th or 5th grade classroom.

Bugs in My Hair! - David Shannon

I enjoyed the reality of this book along with all of the vivid pictures! It helps paint a great picture of a child's imagination. This book would be great for an introduction on lice awareness. This could also be used as an introduction of sicknesses that can be brought into class and spread and then the lesson can be taken into how to prevent these things from happening. Most likely I would read this to grades 1-3.
